You know that moment.
You’re about to raise your hand in a meeting, share the idea that’s been stirring in you, or step toward something that feels bigger than where you’ve been—when suddenly, resistance shows up.
It might be external: the comment that shuts you down, the door that closes, the “you’re too much” or “not enough” that echoes in your ears.
Or it might be internal: the knot in your stomach, the voice that whispers, Who do you think you are?
For years, I treated resistance as a stop sign—proof that maybe I wasn’t ready or that it wasn’t meant to be. But I’ve learned something life-changing: resistance isn’t random. It’s revealing.
The places you’ve faced the most pushback are often the very places that hold your calling.
Why Resistance Shows Up
Resistance rarely meets us when we’re playing it safe. It shows up when we’re moving toward alignment—when we’re stepping into the work, the truth, or the identity we were created for.
Think about it: the enemy doesn’t waste energy attacking what doesn’t matter. He goes after your voice, your courage, your purpose—the exact places you’re called to rise.
What others told you to shrink, God is asking you to expand. The traits you were told to mute—boldness, truth-telling, vision—are not flaws. They are markers of your assignment.
Your resistance? It’s not a wall. It’s a roadmap.
The Data: How Resistance Becomes Purpose
This isn’t just an idea—it’s a pattern seen across research and real lives:
- Leaders are shaped by adversity. Bennis & Thomas found that every leader they studied had a defining “crucible” moment of resistance or hardship that clarified their purpose and forged their leadership style.
- Adversity is common—but often transformative. Two-thirds of adults report significant early adversity (CDC). And studies show more than half experience post-traumatic growth—greater meaning, strength, and clarity—on the other side.
- Closed doors create new paths. Gusto’s founder data shows that 41% of new business owners started after financial pressure or job loss. What looked like failure became the birthplace of calling.
In other words, the pushback you’ve faced isn’t proof you’re unqualified
—it’s evidence you’re on the edge of something that matters.
Action Step: 3 Steps to Turn Resistance Into Your Roadmap
1. Map your hotspots. Write down the top three places you’ve faced the most resistance—comments, setbacks, or repeated battles.
Circle the one that still stirs something in you. That’s where your calling is likely hiding.
2. Flip the lie. For every message resistance handed you (“too much,” “not ready,” “not for people like you”), write down the truth beside it.
Those lies are proof of the power you’re meant to lead with.
3. Take one brave step. Don’t wait until fear disappears. Do the thing anyway. Send the pitch, start the project, ask the question.
Every small act of courage builds evidence that you are capable—and that resistance doesn’t get the final word.
