One of the most common themes I notice in my coaching sessions is rarely said directly.
It’s hidden inside so many of the questions women ask:
“Do you think it’s okay if I…”
…say no?
…ask for the promotion?
…leave this job?
…raise my prices?
…stop volunteering for everything?
…put myself first for once?
…want something more?
The question is different but the need underneath is the same.
They’re waiting for permission.
The Permission We Keep Waiting For
Somewhere along the way, many women learned that before making a bold decision, they needed someone else to validate it.
We subconsciously wait for permission.
Permission to:
- rest.
- lead.
- become visible.
- ask for help.
- dream bigger.
- say no.
- change careers.
- protect our peace.
- build a life that actually feels like their own.
I see it every week in my coaching practice.
These aren’t women who lack intelligence or capability.
Many are executives.
Business owners.
Senior leaders.
Women who make multi-million-dollar decisions every day.
Yet when it comes to their own lives, they often hesitate.
Not because they don’t know what they want.
But because they’re waiting for someone to tell them it’s okay.
Why We Wait
Psychologists have found that women are more likely than men to seek external validation before making major decisions, especially in environments where they’re balancing multiple roles and competing expectations.
From an early age, many girls are rewarded for being agreeable, helpful, and accommodating. Over time, those patterns can become deeply ingrained, making it harder to prioritize our own needs without feeling guilt or fear.
It’s one reason so many accomplished women struggle to advocate for themselves, negotiate compensation, establish boundaries, or pursue opportunities that stretch them.
They’ve been conditioned to believe that putting themselves first requires someone else’s approval.
What I’ve Learned Coaching Women
One of my favorite moments in coaching happens when a client realizes she already knows the answer.
She doesn’t actually need my permission.
She needs my belief.
She needs someone to reflect back what she’s been afraid to trust inside herself.
I’ve helped women:
- Negotiate salaries they thought were impossible.
- Leave jobs that were slowly draining them.
- Launch businesses they’d been dreaming about for years.
- Set boundaries that transformed their marriages.
- Take their first real vacation without checking email every hour.
- Apply for executive roles they assumed were out of reach.
Not because I told them what to do.
But because they finally gave themselves permission to become the woman they already knew they were capable of being.
That’s the beautiful thing about coaching.
I’m not handing out permission slips.
I’m helping women realize they never needed one.
Three Ways to Stop Waiting
1. Notice where you’re asking for permission.
Pay attention to your language this week.
How often do you find yourself asking:
“Do you think I should…”
“Is it okay if…”
Those questions aren’t always seeking advice.
Sometimes they’re seeking approval.
There’s a difference.
2. Ask a different question.
Instead of asking,
“Will other people approve?”
Ask,
“Does this align with my values, my purpose, and the life I’m trying to build?”
That’s what matters most.
3. Write your own permission slip.
Finish these sentences:
I give myself permission to…
- Rest without earning it.
- Speak even if my voice shakes.
- Ask for what I’m worth.
- Dream bigger than feels comfortable.
- Say no without explaining.
- Become visible.
- Do the thing I’ve been putting off.
You may be surprised how powerful those words feel.
