The Weight Of Potential

October 28, 2026

Have you ever felt exhausted by the person you know you’re capable of becoming?

You can see the gap.

The gap between where you are…

…and where you believe you could be.

You know you’re capable of:

  • Writing the book.
  • Starting the business.
  • Leading at the next level.
  • Making a bigger impact.
  • Creating a healthier marriage.
  • Being more present with your kids.
  • Taking better care of yourself.

You see what’s possible.

And instead of inspiring you…

That vision starts feeling heavy.

If you’ve ever felt that tension, you’re not alone.

When Potential Becomes Pressure

One of the greatest gifts we have is the ability to imagine a bigger future.

It’s what drives innovation. Leadership. Growth. Transformation.

But somewhere along the way, many high achievers stop seeing potential as an invitation…and start treating it like an obligation.

Instead of thinking,

“Look what’s possible.”

We think,

“Why am I not there yet?”

Potential becomes another standard we’re failing to meet.

Another reason to feel behind.

Another reminder that we should be doing more.

Working harder.

Moving faster.

It’s no wonder so many successful women feel like they’re carrying an invisible weight.

They’re not just carrying today’s responsibilities.

They’re carrying tomorrow’s expectations too.

The Psychology Behind the Pressure

Psychologists have long recognized that high achievers often experience what researchers call the “ideal self gap”—the distance between who we are today and who we believe we should become.

A small gap can be motivating.

But when that gap becomes too large—or when we believe we should already be there—it often creates guilt, anxiety, and chronic dissatisfaction instead of momentum.

Ironically, the very vision that’s meant to inspire us can become the thing that keeps us feeling like we’re never enough.

The problem isn’t having big dreams.

The problem is believing your worth depends on how quickly you achieve them.

What This Season Has Been Teaching Me

Over the past year, I’ve been dreaming bigger than ever before.

Speaking on more stages.

Growing my coaching practice.

Writing more.

Expanding my impact.

There are moments when I can see the vision so clearly that I want to skip ahead.

I catch myself wondering…

“Why isn’t it happening faster?”

Then I’m reminded that every season has lessons we can only learn by living through it.

Patience.

Resilience.

Wisdom.

Humility.

Courage.

The goal isn’t just to reach the next level.

It’s to become the kind of person who can thrive there.

Because success has a way of amplifying who we already are. If we reach the next level before we’ve developed the character, habits, and perspective to sustain it, the very thing we’ve worked so hard to build can become overwhelming.

Looking back, I can see that every challenge, every setback, and every season that felt slower than I wanted was preparing me in ways I couldn’t appreciate at the time.

Maybe growth isn’t taking longer than it should.

Maybe it’s taking exactly as long as it needs to.

Because sometimes the greatest work isn’t what we’re building.

It’s who we’re becoming while we build it.

Three Ways to Take the Pressure Off Your Potential

1. Let your vision guide you—not condemn you.

Your vision should create direction.

Not pressure.

If your future self constantly makes you feel like you’re falling behind, you’ve stopped using your vision as a compass and started using it as a measuring stick.

The purpose of a vision is to pull you forward, not weigh you down.

2. Focus on becoming, not just achieving.

It’s easy to become obsessed with the next milestone.

The promotion.

The business.

The book.

The stage.

But every goal is also an invitation to become someone new.

Instead of asking,

“How much faster can I get there?”

Ask,

“Who do I need to become to thrive when I arrive?”

The lessons you learn along the way are often more valuable than the achievement itself.

3. Celebrate who you’re becoming.

One day, you’ll reach goals that feel impossible today.

And when you do, those accomplishments won’t be what sustain your impact.

Your wisdom will.

Your character will.

Your resilience will.

Your ability to lead, serve, and navigate challenges with integrity will.

The greatest transformation isn’t the title you’ll earn, the business you’ll build, or the audience you’ll reach.

It’s the person you’ll become while pursuing those things.

Because success can open doors.

But character is what allows you to walk through them well.
